What is digital label printing?

Digital label printing produces full-colour labels and stickers digitally, which are then applied to your product. Rather than printing onto the item directly, the design goes onto a label and the label goes on.

Because it's digital there are no screens to make, so you get full colour and detail at low cost, even on small runs. And because labels can be cut to almost any shape on a range of materials, it's one of the most flexible ways to brand a product.

Where it fits best

It's the natural choice when you want photographic detail, lots of colours, or different designs across a batch, without the setup of a method like screen printing.

It's also ideal for products you can't print on directly, where a well-chosen label and adhesive does the job neatly on glass, plastic, metal or card.

How digital label printing works

It's quick and direct. There are no screens to prepare, so the design goes straight from your file to a finished, applied label.

  1. 1

    Print in full colour

Your design is printed straight from a digital file onto label or sticker material.

  2. 2

    Cut to shape

The labels are cut to the size and shape you need, from simple rounds to custom outlines.

  3. 3

    Peel and apply

They're applied to your product with a peel-and-stick adhesive chosen for the surface.

Where the flexibility comes from

It's all in the materials. From paper to vinyl to clear or metallic stock, and gloss or matte finishes, the label can be matched to the look you want and the conditions the product will face, indoors or out.

See the flexibility

One design, your choice of label

The same artwork can be printed on different stocks and finishes to match the look you want and the conditions the product will face. Try a few combinations and watch the label change.

Paper, gloss, rounded label

A label is printed, cut to shape and applied, so it can go on almost any surface.

The advantages

  • Full colour and detail. Photos, gradients and unlimited colours all reproduce cleanly.
  • No screens to set up. Economical for small runs, and easy to vary the design between labels.
  • Quick turnaround. It goes straight from file to label.
  • Flexible shapes and materials. Cut to shape, with paper, vinyl, clear or metallic stock and gloss or matte finishes.
  • Goes on almost anything. Any item with a suitable flat or curved surface can be labelled.
  • Durable options. Weatherproof, hard-wearing materials where you need them.

The trade-offs

  • It's an applied label. It sits on the surface, so it isn't as permanent as printing or engraving into the item.
  • Can wear or peel over time. How well it lasts depends on the material and how the product is used.
  • A visible edge. There's a label edge and a slight feel, unlike a print that's part of the item.
  • Material choice matters. The right stock and adhesive are needed for the surface and the conditions.
